A Closer Look at Spirit North

by Brian E. Taylor

A closer look at Spirit North

When Ben Massey (Nick Marshan) wants to go north to fulfill his dream of being a vaudeville performer, for the second time, he meets up with opposition by his Son, Paul Massey, (John Bess), in his own house. Because Paul wants so bad to make a good name for African Americans, he goes the whole 9 to prove it, in one pivotal case. His wife Leila Massey (Bria Hobgood) has to defend her position as a school teacher that knows what's best for the community and her students, puts her at greater odds with her husband.

Ben finds comic relief in reflecting on his golden years gone by, telling the classic stories of being on the road, performing in duos with Clarence his partner in crime and trying to take care of his wife of many years. Ben is a very tender and compassionate character that brought me to tears more than once, as I know he will do for you.

Paul does a good job working hard as a powerful lawyer and creating enemies among his family and friends. He is very believable.

The drama of Spirit North has put me in check on what side of the issue am I on when it comes to the truth when justice stands in the way. You can still catch the show November 28, 29 & 30th, Fri & Sat 7:30PM and Sunday 3:00PM. Call Cite' des Arts 291-1122 for tickets and reservations.
